Kayaking in Ålesund
Ålesund sits spread across islands at the mouth of the Sunnmøre fjords, which makes it one of the few Norwegian towns you can genuinely explore by kayak, paddling past the Art Nouveau waterfront and out between skerries and beaches. Guided trips run from sheltered harbour loops to full-day fjord crossings.
Best time: May to September for long daylight and calmer seas. Midsummer evening paddles are a highlight.
Local tips
- Beginners are fine on guided trips. Sheltered water options exist for most weather.
- Bring a change of clothes; sea spray finds everyone eventually.
