Full description
The Fjellheisen cable car takes you from the lower station in Tromsdalen up to Storsteinen, 421 metres above sea level, in about five minutes. From the top you look out over Tromsø island, the bridge, the fjords and the mountains beyond.
This is a round-trip ticket with time slots. When you book, you choose a time for the ride up and a later time for the ride down on the same day, and you spend the time in between on the mountain. Departures run regularly through the day, and extra trips are added when it is busy.
At the top there are several viewpoints, hiking trails and the Fjellstua café for coffee, hot chocolate, waffles or a light meal. Come in daylight for the long views, or in the evening for the city lights and, on clear nights between September and April, a good chance of seeing the northern lights. From 20 May to 22 July the midnight sun stays above the horizon around the clock.
Fjellheisen has run since 1961 and is the quickest way to get above the city without leaving it.

Important information
Know before you go
- You choose two time slots when booking: one for the ride up and a later one for the ride down, on the same day
- The cable car runs every day from 09:00 to 00:00. The last ride up is at 23:30 and the last ride down at 00:00
- Strong wind or bad weather can close the cable car at short notice
- There is no parking at the lower station during construction. Free parking is at Solstrandvegen 30, about five minutes' walk away
- Bus 26 from Torgsenteret in the city centre stops at Fjellheisen. A taxi from the centre takes about 10 minutes
- During construction of the new station (until around May 2027) the cable car cannot take wheelchairs or walkers
- Children under 3 ride free with an adult
- Dogs ride free but are not allowed in the café
